Brief History

Bauer Electronics Corporation was formed in 1959 in San Carlos, California, coincidental with a FCC ruling that allowed most Class IV AM stations to increase their daytime power to 1000 watts. That overnight market of over 1200 radio stations helped to provide the first Bauer innovation--a high class AM transmitter kit at a price within the reach of the many stations about to quadruple their power--with the beautifully designed Model 707. In the next ten years, over 400 Model 707 transmitters were sold, most of them as kits, assembled by station owners, their engineers, and even their secretaries. One 707 was assembled during a NAB convention in Washington, DC by a Kelly girl and that transmitter is still in service today.

Though the 707 was the first Bauer transmitter, many more followed, both AM and FM, and in power levels up to 50KW. They can be found from Radio Vatican to the South Pole--from Bogotá to Bangkok--more than 2500--all shapes and sizes.

Over the years, R&D remained wedded to the classic Fritz Bauer designs where they could not be improved upon, but departed freely where state-of-the-art demanded a new approach.

Bauer operated from plants in the California cities of San Carlos, Palo Alto, Carpinteria, and Sacramento, and under the names of Granger, Sparta, Cetec and Elcom Bauer. Founder Fritz Bauer retired in 1960 and died in 1961. Another founder, Paul Gregg, is still with the company and provides the connection with the past and the present.

Today

The last California plant, Elcom Bauer, was closed in 1993, and the company was relocated to El Paso, Texas. Now a Texas Corporation, Bauer continues to provide support for its transmitters still in use around the world, finds new homes for those on the loose (re-manufacturing), and builds custom antenna coupling equipment, diplexers and triplexers.
